AMMAN (JT) - French Ambassador Denys Gauer on
Tuesday highlighted his country’s support for efforts aiming to make
Aqaba a centre of economic development.
In a statement issued at the conclusion of
French Week in Aqaba, the second to be held in the port city in as many
years, Gauer stressed that his country would, in coordination with
European Union partners, continue to support efforts led by the Aqaba
Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA) in that regard.
French Week was organised on the occasion of the
port call in Aqaba of three ships from the French navy.
It concluded on Sunday with the departure of the
Mistral and the frigate Dupleix towards the Saudi city of Jeddah.
A day earlier, the Var, with Rear Admiral Gérard
Valin and the general staff of the French naval troops deployed in the
Indian Ocean, had set sail after numerous exchanges with Jordanian
counterparts took place onboard the French navy ships.
According to the ambassador’s statement, French
investments in Jordan last year totalled over one billion euros, namely
in the telecommunications, banking and cement industry.
On Friday, the ambassador told a press
conference in Aqaba that France was the second biggest investor in
Jordan after Kuwait, noting that he expects more French investment.
"We hope this presence will be reinforced in
coming years with the development of civil nuclear energy in Jordan," he
said, noting that French presence in Aqaba appears mostly in the tourism
sector.
Addressing the same press conference, Rear
Admiral Valin said around 1,000 French servicemen and sailors aboard the
three navy ships had a taste of Aqaba tourism and Jordanian hospitality
during the one-week port call.
ASEZA President Hosni Abu Gheida said he valued
France’s choice of Aqaba for the port call and invited more French
investment to the port city.
“Aqaba is still looking forward to attracting
more French investment,” Abu Gheida was quoted by the Jordan News Agency,
Petra, as saying during the press conference.
During the week, different aspects of French
culture were presented to the citizens of Aqaba through classical music,
jazz concerts and film screenings.
In addition to these cultural activities, guests
enjoyed a visit to the Ayla Aviation Academy and had the opportunity to
attend a football tournament that brought together 12 Jordanian and
French teams, according to a press release issued by the French embassy.
Ambassador Gauer congratulated the Aqaba Gulf
Team for its victory, adding that French Week highlighted the excellent
relations between France and Jordan.
